What is the FAFSA?
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the form that opens the door to most types of college financial aid—grants, scholarships, work-study, and federal loans. It asks for information about your family’s finances to see how much help you can get.
Filling it out is free, and it’s the first big step to making college more affordable.

Scholarships
Scholarships are free money for college that you don’t have to pay back, usually awarded for things like academics, talents, interests, or community service. They can come from schools, organizations, or even local businesses—so applying for as many as possible can really cut down your college costs.
Dr. Juan Andrade Jr. Scholarship for Young Hispanic Leaders | USHLI
→ up to $1,000 (or $500 at 2‑year colleges) to students up to age 25 who demonstrate financial need and a commitment to servant leadership—recipients also get to attend the USHLI National Conference
Denny’s HFE Campaign & USHLI Partner to Award Scholarships!
→ Awards scholarships to high school and college students who submit creative ideas for uniting their communities—while also helping combat childhood hunger. Winners get scholarship money and the opportunity to see their idea brought to life through Denny’s support. (not hispanic specific)
Rumba Meats & USHLI Scholarship
→ Awards 25 Hispanic high school seniors with $1,000 each to support post‑secondary education and empower future community leaders. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, have at least one parent of Hispanic ancestry, maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA, and show commitment to community service and preserving their heritage.
→ a major nonprofit founded in 1975 that provides scholarships—typically $500 to $5,000—to thousands of U.S. students each year whose families are at least 25% Hispanic/Latinx, and who meet GPA, citizenship, and FAFSA requirements
TheDream.US National Scholarship for Immigrant Students
→ offers up to $33,000 to undocumented students eligible for in-state tuition at partner colleges. Applicants must have a 2.5+ GPA, arrive in the U.S. before age 16, and apply by February 28. It covers tuition and fees for full-time study toward an associate or bachelor’s degree.
Pursuit of Excellence Scholarships
→ provides financial support to low-income students aiming to attend four-year colleges. First-year awards range from $500 to $6,000, with renewals based on need and academic performance. Applicants must be high school seniors or community college students transferring to a UC, with a family income typically under $80,000. The application deadline for 2025 is February 28
Scholarships – Chicana Latina Foundation
→ offers $1,500–$2,000 merit-based awards to 40–45 Latina students pursuing higher education. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a U.S. college for the Fall 2025–Spring 2026 academic year and have completed at least 12 college units. The application deadline for the 2025–2026 cohort has passed.
HOLA at Microsoft Scholarship | Global Diversity and Inclusion at Microsoft
→ The HOLA at Microsoft Scholarship awards up to $10,000 to Hispanic/Latino high school seniors planning to study computer science or related tech fields. Applicants need a minimum 3.0 GPA, demonstrate leadership and community involvement, and apply by February 15.
Puerto Rican Bar Association (PRBA) Scholarship Award
→ awards financial support to law students enrolled in ABA-accredited law schools for the 2025–2026 academic year.Applicants must demonstrate financial need and a commitment to the Puerto Rican or LatinX community. The application deadline is July 11
MAES Latinos in Science and Engineering Scholarship
→ offers scholarships up to $2,000 for Latino students pursuing STEM degrees who demonstrate strong academics and leadership. Applications usually close around March and require proof of Hispanic heritage and STEM interest.
Sallie Mae Fund Hispanic Heritage Scholarship
→ awards up to $10,000 to Hispanic high school seniors with a 3.0+ GPA and financial need. The deadline typically falls in March, supporting students who excel academically and contribute to their communities.
Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards
→ provides scholarships up to $10,000 for Latino high school seniors excelling in academics, leadership, and community service. Applicants must graduate in spring 2026 and enroll full-time in college for the next academic year.
→ awards varying scholarships to Hispanic students pursuing STEM majors with academic achievement and community involvement. Deadlines usually occur between February and March.

→ provides scholarships to Hispanic students demonstrating leadership, academic strength, and community service, with award amounts and deadlines varying yearly. It supports students committed to civic engagement and public service.

Becas

Standardized Testing
(SAT & ACT)
Standardized testing means taking the same test under the same conditions as everyone else, so students can be compared fairly. Common examples are the SAT and ACT, which ask multiple-choice and short-answer questions in math, reading, and writing. Colleges sometimes use these scores to decide who to admit or give scholarships to, though many schools are now test-optional.
SAT
The SAT is a college admissions test with 98 questions split between reading, writing, and math, plus an unscored pre-test section. It lasts about 2 hours and 14 minutes and is scored on a 400–1600 scale. Below are free resources to help you prepare to take the test:

ACT
The ACT is a standardized test for college admissions that measures skills in English, math, and reading, with optional sections for science and writing. It takes a little over 2 hours for the core test and provides a score between 1 and 36.
